SPOT REMOVAL GUIDE

Long’s Carpet Cleaning understands that spots and spills can occur at any time of the day or night, and the quicker you attend to the spot, the better your chances are of it coming up. So we have put together a handy spot removal guide to help you when those emergencies arise. If you are unsuccessful at removing the spot yourself, and would like additional help please call us.

*The stain removal procedures recommended in this guide are provided to assist you in maintaining your carpet, and reflects the best information available. Please remember - no carpet is stain proof! Therefore, Long’s Carpet Cleaning makes no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the effectiveness of the stain removal procedures described herein to totally remove the stain(s).

*Please use caution and test all procedures/solutions in an inconspiuous area before proceeding

What to do in case of spots or stains

·         First and foremost, act quickly. Pick up any solids that are easily removable. In the case of muddy footprints, wait until they are thoroughly dry, then vacuum. For heavy liquid spills use white paper or terry cloth towels to soak up as much liquid as possible. NEVER scrub or rub abrasively, as damage to the carpet pile may result.

·         NOTE: After all spot removal procedures, you should use a neutralizing rinse to remove any traces of detergent.

·         In the case of especially stubborn or unusual stains, call us for more specific instructions or to schedule a visit.

Types of Stains

There are two types of stains that appear on carpets:

·         Water Soluble, which includes most food, beverages and body fluids.

·         Solvent Soluble, which includes oils, grease, tar, crayon, lipstick, butter and cooking oil.

Treatment for Stain Removal

·         To remove water soluble stains: Try plain water first. Use two white terry cloth towels, one wet, one dry. Gently blot the area, alternating between wet and dry until the spot is gone. If the spot is still visible you will need to use a detergent spot remover. Only use products that are specifically recommended as safe for carpet. If you don’t have a commercially prepared spotter, you can make one by mixing 1 teaspoon of mild detergent (such as Ivory Liquid) into 1 pint of lukewarm water. Do NOT use automatic dishwasher detergent or laundry detergent. Sponge the detergent mixture onto the stain and work the solution from the edges toward the center of the stain, a lather will form. Gently sponge off this lather with clear, cold water until all visible signs of suds are gone. Follow with a neutralizing rinse. You MUST RESIST the temptation to use bleach on stubborn stains. Bleach will cause damage and discoloration to the carpet fiber (the only exception to this is solution dyed polypropylene. If you know for sure that is what you have, follow the manufacturers instructions carefully).

·         Products to remove solvent soluble stains such as Energine, Carbona, or K2R are available at retail stores. Citrus solvent products such as Goo-Gone may also be effective, although they need more time to dissolve the spot. Apply the solvent by gently blotting with a cloth. Never pour a liquid directly onto the carpet. Solvents, if poured onto a stain, may cause the glue holding the carpet to the backing to become loose, since this type of adhesive is an oil based product. After the solvent soluble stain has been removed, follow with the detergent solution procedure outlined above.

·         To perform a neutralizing rinse, mix one tablespoon of white vinegar into 1 pint of cold water. Sponge this mixture lightly into the affected area. The vinegar will neutralize any detergent residue that may remain in the carpet or that may wick to the surface during the drying process. Blot as much moisture out of the area as possible with absorbent white toweling or paper towels. Never use newspaper or anything with color or print. Finally, lay a dry towel over the area and weight with a heavy object, at least overnight. After the area is dry, brush lightly to restore normal texture.

Acetone

·         Acetone is the primary ingredient in many non-oily fingernail polishes and removers. It evaporates very rapidly and is highly flammable. Acetone dissolves acetate fibers. Blot with a solution of 1 teaspoon maximum of liquid HAND dish washing detergent per cup of lukewarm water; blot with lukewarm water with a white towel; blot dry with a dry white towel. Because Acetone is such a strong solvent if it penetrated into the backing of the carpet the carpet may buckle up and come unglued. A professional may be required to re-glue the carpet or replace the damaged area.

·         If unsuccessful, Call Long’s Carpet Cleaning at 334-233-7847.

Acne Medicine

·         Most acne medicines (and many other medications) contain Benzoyl Peroxide which gradually forms Hydrogen Peroxide and can eventually leave bleach spots in carpet. Blot with a non-flammable dry cleaning fluid such as Carbona® or Energine® on a white towel. Do not pour directly on the carpet or you will destroy the latex glue holding the primary and secondary backing together. Blot with a solution of 1 teaspoon maximum of liquid HAND dish washing detergent per cup of lukewarm water blot with a solution of 2 tablespoons of household ammonia per cup of water blot with a solution of 1 cup of WHITE vinegar per 2 cups of water blot with lukewarm water with a white towel blot dry with a dry white towel .
